| In 1976, Sec. 302 of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act created eight Regional Fishery Management Councils (Councils): New England, Mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Pacific, North Pacific, and Western Pacific. Each Council’s area of responsibility is the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) adjacent to its constituent states. Councils develop fishery management plans and management measures for fisheries within their area of responsibility. NOAA Fisheries Service approves and implements these plans and measures. |
